As a specialist in adventure travel in Greece, Grand Angle has designed this Cretan Odyssey itinerary to reveal the multiple facets of the island. The journey focuses on the wilder southern coast, from the hinterland of Rethymnon to the impressive White Mountains, offering a vision of Crete rich in contrasts.
This hiking tour combines coastal paths along the Libyan Sea with traverses of renowned gorges, including Aradena and the famous Samaria Gorge, the longest in Europe. The route leads to authentic sites like the village of Argyroupoli and its lush springs, and the secluded seaside haven of Loutro, which is accessible only on foot or by boat. The experience is enriched by cultural discoveries, with visits to the Arkadi Monastery, a potent symbol of Cretan resistance, and the legendary Minoan Palace of Knossos. This comprehensive itinerary connects landscapes, history, and culture through an immersive walking journey.
Arrival at Heraklion international airport, transfer (included) to the hotel located in the heart of the port city, considered to be one of the cradles of European civilization. Welcome and orientation meeting by your guide at the hotel before dinner.
Dinner and overnight in Heraklion in a 3* hotel.
Transfer (1h30) to Argyroupoli in the hinterland of Rethymnon. This mountain village is full of surprises! A powerful town since ancient times, with a rich Roman fortress, Argyroupoli (formerly Lappa) is packed with Minoan, Greek and Roman remains, and boasts a beautiful historic center. But it also has surroundings that are extraordinary, and quite different from the classic landscapes of Crete: springs, waterfalls and windmills, set in a lush, enchanting environment. Visit Argyroupoli and stroll through the surrounding countryside: chapels, sheepfolds, authentic villages. Transfer (approx. 40 mins) to Plakias, a charming seaside resort with a crescent-shaped bay and beautiful sandy beaches. Option to walk along the Libyan Sea to Akra Kakomouri Cape and the caves.
About 2 hours of walking, +/-200m/656ft. Daypack to carry.
Dinner and overnight in Plakias in a 3* hotel.
We take a small boat to the Prévéli palm grove. The monastery we visit is Piso Moni, which we reach on foot from the palm grove. Return by the same route through the gorge to the beach. The river, surrounded by palm trees, flows into the sea - a delightful freshwater swim! After a break on the sandy beach, return to Plakias by boat.
Alternative if there is no boat: Bus transfer from Plakias to the monastery of Piso Moni in Preveli (approx. 20 minutes). After visiting the monastery, we walk to the gorges and beach of Preveli. We enjoy the beach and a walk through the palm forest near the gorge. The return journey can be made either by boat or bus, after a 600-metre walk (footpath) to the next beach, Drymiskiano Ammoudi.
About 3 to 4 hours of walking depending on the route chosen, +200m/656ft to 450m/1312ft, -200m/656ft to -450m/1312ft. Daypack to carry.
Dinner and overnight in Plakias in a 3* hotel.
Transfer to the White Mountains... always white! In winter, snow covers them, then the sun reflects off the dazzling white limestone peaks in the summer. En route, we take a break and visit the village of Frangokastello (1 hour), famous for its imposing Venetian fort, a witness to the turbulent history of Crete. In Chora Sfakion, we take the ferry to Loutro, a charming seaside village in its own cove, accessible only on foot or by boat. Hike to Livaniana, with beautiful sea views, and descend into the lower Aradena Gorge. These narrow, easy gorges, lined with oleanders, are magnificent. Return to Loutro via the marble beach: here, nothing but large marble slabs and incredibly clear water; impossible to resist a swim! Before arriving in Loutro, you'll discover the charming site of the Port of Phoenix.
About 4 hours walking, 8km/5mi, +/-470m/1542ft. Daypack to carry.
Dinner and overnight in Loutro in a 2* hotel.
By boat along the coast to the small port of Agia Roumeli, at the entrance to the famous Samaria Gorge. Located in the heart of Crete's only national park (the White Mountains National Park: Lefka Ori), the 16km-long Samaria Gorge (the longest in Europe) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the "nature" category. It is home to an incredible biodiversity, including many endemic species of plants and flowers. The Samaria Gorge, which runs from the Omalos plateau at 1250m to the sea, has also played an important role in the island's history. We set off from the sea as far as Afentis Christοs, where we will take a picnic break. Return walk. Return to Loutro by boat.
About 4.5 hours of walking, 16km/10mi, +/- 470m/1542ft. Daypack to carry.
Dinner and overnight in Loutro in a 2* hotel.
After breakfast, we leave Loutro on foot for a hike along the coast to Glyka Nera beach. We enjoy this magnificent beach before taking a taxi boat to Chora Sfakion. Lunch in the harbor, followed by a 1.5 hour transfer to the Arkadi monastery. Situated 20km/12.4mi south-east of Rethymnon on a fertile plateau at the foot of Mount Ida, the monastery is not only a highly interesting cultural monument but also a historic site, symbolizing Cretan resistance against the Ottoman occupation. We spend around 45 minutes here. Transfer to Heraklion (1.5 hours).
About 1.5 hours of walking, 3.5km/2.2mi, +30m/100ft, -50m/165ft. Daypack to carry.
Dinner and overnight in Heraklion at a 3* hotel.

It is the client’s responsibility to arrive prepared with the items listed below to help insure a safe and enjoyable trip.
The following items are required for this trip unless otherwise noted. When packing, think layered clothing systems that work together and can be easily added or removed.
Important Note: Please, no cotton hiking/cycling clothes. Synthetic clothing is very efficient in drying quickly. Merino wool material clothing is also efficient in drying quickly, is comfortable to wear and has the advantage of not developing a bad odor after use.
After years of experience planning adventure travel around the world, we've learned that anything can happen, and every traveler should carry a basic personal first aid kit. We want to ensure our guests are well-prepared and make smart informed travel decisions. In many of the places we operate trips, it may be challenging to find certain medications and/or first aid supplies, and sometimes common items you desire may not be available in the destination you are travelling. That's why it's good to be prepared and carry a small supply of first aid supplies, any prescription medication, and/or over-the-counter medications you may require during your travels.
We recommend discussing your travel plans, vaccination requirements, and any medication usage with your primary healthcare provider before embarking on our trips. This helps ensure you have a safe and enjoyable travel experience.
During our “Guided” trips, our staff always have emergency equipment on hand to assist anyone in need, including our guests. This equipment includes communication devices and a comprehensive first aid kit with items we've found to be effective for the most common health issues we encounter.
Here is a basic list of what we think makes a good personal travel first aid kit:
PACKING FOR TRAVEL: It is recommended that you prepare your items in the following manner for your travels to this trip.
“Carry-on Bag(s)” - This is the bag you will bring with you on the plane. We recommend all your pertinent information be in this bag (passport, travel documents, etc.) as well as your most important gear items (hiking footwear, jacket, prescription medication, etc.) in case any checked luggage items becomes lost or delayed.
“Checked Bag(s)” - This bag will be checked and contain the rest of your personal items (clothing and gear, etc.).
Important Note: Again, it is recommended to either wear or pack in your “Carry-on Bag” the main gear items you need for this trip vs. putting them in your checked “Travel Bag” (in case luggage is delayed). Hiking footwear is probably the hardest item to replace last minute if items become lost or delayed past the intended start date of the trip. Lost or delayed luggage has become more and more common in major airports for international travel since the global pandemic.
LUGGAGE MANAGEMENT DURING TRIP: During this trip, the packing system needs to be in 2 bags.
Extra Luggage - “Checked Bag(s)” & ”Carry-on Bag(s)”: This bag will contain all the items you want to bring along on the trip. It will be transferred by vehicle and you will have access to it at the end of each day of activity, but not throughout the day.
Day Backpack (not provided): All guests need a backpack, which they will be responsible for carrying during trip activities. Items in this bag should include anything you may need throughout the day during the trip. (i.e. rain gear, warm layers, water, sunscreen/lip balm, snacks/food, camera/phone, etc.).
